Demolition drive to resume on Wednesday; CM defends move in I-Day speech
A senior BBMP official said, “The BBMP is ready with a plan and will continue its efforts to clear the city of encroachment. Once, the work at the municipality resumes on Tuesday, the concerned staff members will start marking the properties that have encroached upon SWDs.” To top this, chief minister Siddaramaiah defended BBMP’s demolition drive while delivering the 70th Independence Day speech where he said that during the three years of his regime, his government had ‘evicted and confiscated 4,950 acres of encroached lands worth Rs 52,000 crore.’
“The residents suffer from water-logging and flooding whenever there are heavy rains. This situation is due to illegal encroachment and drains. Besides removing structures and evicting illegal dwellers, stringent action is being initiated against the builders as well as officers who colluded with the land encroachers,” said Siddaramaiah.
Meanwhile, the BBMP is also planning to upload maps based on satellite imagery of geographical information system on its website. These will detail the SWD network in the city so that the future property buyers are not duped
by middlemen and corrupt officials.
The civic body has already uploaded 1,923 revenue maps on the palike’s website detailing the extent of encroachment of SWDs – classified under three categories such as Bengaluru East, Bengaluru North and Bengaluru North Additional; there are sub-folders giving details of areas coming under the zone with details of encroachment. However, many residents were unhappy saying that the maps were very old and full of errors.
